She grew up in a creative household comprising a mother who taught piano, a father who painted portraits and landscapes, and siblings who would later find success as painters and sculptors. In a century that did its best to keep women "in their place," Rosa Bonheur (1822--99) defined herself outside of the social and legal codes of her time.
